Continuing my interviews, I gained more knowledge about DNA/RNA sequencing from an interview with a professor at UT Southwestern focusing on immunology. It was incredible to learn more about the wide-reaching consequences of genetics and diagnostic procedures that make pediatric diagnosis easier. A question I still am researching is how the various platforms map human chromosomes.
I completed my first interview assessment. It was wonderful to reflect on my interview and plan my new goals as I prepare for my original work. It was more challenging than I previously thought to create a vision for my original work plan as I have too many ideas including creating a handbook for prenatal testing, a study on pathogenic immunology, and a detailed report of how genetic cancers develop. I plan to read more literature to assess what information needs to be published in the scientific community that will raise awareness in the public.
In the next week, I hope to present my original work proposal and reach out to the professionals I have interviewed to ask for mentorship. I am so excited to gain wet-lab experience in genetics as it will tremendously benefit me. Moreover, I hope to plan my speech and share my incredible experiences with my peers and learn from them as well.
