This week in ISM focused on building connections and professionalism. I gained a tremendous amount of knowledge on cold calling and emailing. While honing my cold-calling skills with my peers, I anticipated different scenarios and received feedback. Furthermore, I polished my resume through peer reviews. Finally, I completed my second annotated bibliography. I was more successful in crafting my annotated bibliography the second time and truly enjoyed researching neonatal genomic sequencing. I hope to gain more insight into the various platforms and databases where genetic data is stored to understand how diagnosis works after genetic testing. It was more challenging to understand some genetic mechanisms, such as FSERs (fetal-specific epigenetic regions), listed in the research papers I analyzed. However, I was ultimately successful in finding a resource that detailed the various diagnostic practices thoroughly.

Next week, I hope to build my correspondence list and schedule interviews with medical and research professionals. Their perspectives will offer invaluable insight as I start planning my original work in the fall. I also cannot wait to write my topic proposal and document the knowledge I’ve gained through reading numerous research findings. I plan to venture out into the professional field with confidence and for an opportunity to learn and grow.
