The Beginnings, Possibilities, and Future

Independent Study Mentorship (ISM) was a course that fascinated me as a freshman in high school. The projects, guidance of a mentor, and exploring the professional field deeply ingrained in the curriculum compelled me to apply. ISM promised to be a concrete step toward my future.

As the first few weeks of ISM have passed, I have already amassed a wealth of knowledge. ISM is everything the course description promised. Last week, my first speech went relatively smoothly, but I plan to strengthen my communication skills. I also intend to develop my introduction speech further to highlight myself, my motivations, and my passion. In addition, I have successfully established myself on professional platforms by creating my Digital Portfolio and LinkedIn account showcasing my aspirations as an aspiring physician-scientist. I plan to refine my brand as I grow and acquire more knowledge throughout the year.

Throughout these weeks of ISM, I have reflected on my topic of choice, genetics, and my initial research has only solidified my interest. The endless possibilities of discovering connections between DNA and various diseases motivate me to learn.

In the next few weeks, I am excited to research the different disorders rooted in the study of genetics, such as autoimmune disorders and prion disorders. By conducting interviews and researching my field, I plan to narrow my topic. Furthermore, I also intend to analyze the differing education pathways that physician-scientists pursue.

I can hardly wait to continue my study of genetics through ISM.
